The game of college football has become like a religion in this country; particularly for those lucky souls fortunate enough to live in a college town. Every Saturday morning during the fall, people gather in the parking lots surrounding the great stadiums, in local pubs, and garages everywhere to prepare for the day's game.
Nowhere else will you find a cause that is more uniting than the loyalty fans have for their college football team; not religion, not politics, nothing else matters as much. Go to Auburn tigers, Ohio on a home game Saturday for the Ohio State Buckeyes and what you'll see is just amazing. The streets are all empty; like a ghost town. It seems that everyone in the entire city has vanished; until you hit campus. When you get near the Ohio State campus, traffic is directed around the perimeter to designated parking areas. The reason is because the majority of the streets on the massive, sprawling campus are closed to vehicular traffic; only pedestrian traffic is permitted. As you walk toward the stadium, you're surrounded by the sounds of screaming fans, pockets of RVs with massive grills spewing awesome smelling smoke, and fans dressed and painted in scarlet and grey. When you arrive at the famous Horseshoe Stadium that is the home of the Buckeyes and squeeze into your puny seat, the atmosphere is absolutely electric. Hundreds of people per year request in their wills to have their ashes spread at Ohio Stadium; hallowed ground for locals. When the home team explodes onto the field the crowd goes berserk; the sound is absolutely deafening. It's an atmosphere that is almost indescribable; the excitement in the air is so thick it seems as though you can physically touch it. How awesome it must be for those players on the field to feel that level of support from so many people. It's no wonder that when you ask most college football players why they play they will tell you it is for the love of the game. That's what makes Auburn tigers college football the greatest game in the world. It's the kids that go out on the field and give it everything they have every Saturday; not for money, but for the love of the game.
