About 25 years ago I began formulating mfm dog food at a time when the entire pet food industry seemed quagmire and focused on such things as protein and fat percentages without any real regard for ingredients. Since boot leather and soap could make a pet food with the "ideal" percentages, it was clear that analytical percentages do not end the story about pet food value. I was convinced then, as I am now, that a food can be no better than the ingredients of which it is composed. Since this ingredient idea has caught on in the pet food industry, it has taken on a commercial life that distorts and perverts the meaning of the underlying philosophy of food quality and proper feeding practices. Is health reducible to which ingredients a commercial product does or does not have? As contradictory as it may seem to what I have just said, no it is not. Here's why.
AAFCO Approval The official Publication of the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) gives wide latitude for ingredients that can be used in animal foods. As I have pointed out in my book, The Truth About Pet Foods, approved ingredients can include*: dehydrated garbage undried processed animal waste products polyethylene roughage replacement (plastic) hydrolyzed poultry feathers hydrolyzed hair hydrolyzed leather meal poultry hatchery by-product meat meal tankage peanut hulls ground almond shells (*Association of American Feed Control Officials, 1998 Official Publication) Simultaneously, this same regulatory agency prohibits the use of many proven beneficial natural ingredients that one can find readily available for human consumption such as bee pollen, glucosamine, L-carnitine, spirulina and many other nutraceuticals. It would be easy to conclude that reason does not rule when it comes to what officially can or cannot be used in pet foods. From the regulators’ standpoint, they operate from the simplistic nutritional idea that the value of food has to do with percentages and that there is no special merit to any particular ingredient. They deny the tens of thousands of scientific research articles proving that the kind of ingredient and its quality can make all the difference in terms of health. They also are silent about the damaging effect of food processing and the impact of time, light, heat, oxygen and packaging on nutritional and health value. The 100% Complete Myth Consumers are increasingly becoming alert to the value of more natural mfm dog food. Everyone intuitively knows that the closer the diet is to real, fresh, wholesome foods, the better the chance that good health will result. Unfortunately, people do not apply this same common sense to pet foods. Instead they purchase "100% complete" processed foods, perhaps even going the extra mile and selecting "super premium" or "natural" brands, thinking they are doing the best that can be done. They surrender their mind to a commercial ploy (100% completeness) and do to their pets what they would never do to themselves or their family - eat the same packaged product at every meal, day in and day out. No processed food can be "100% complete" because there is not a person on the planet who has 100% knowledge of nutrition. The claim on its face is absurd. Understanding this simple principle is more important than any pet food formulation regardless of the merits of its ingredients. Everything that follows will begin with that premise, i.e., no food should be fed exclusively on a continuous basis no matter what the claims of completeness or ingredient quality. Genetics Is The Key Pets need the food they are biologically adapted to. It's a matter of context. Just as a fish needs to be in water to stay healthy, a pet needs its natural food milieu to be healthy. All creatures must stay true to their design. What could be more obvious or simple? For a carnivore the correct genetic match is prey, carrion and incidental fresh plant material, and even some fur and feathers, as well as the occasional surprise of unmentionables found in decaying matter. It's not a pretty picture to think that "FiFi" with her pink bow and polished toenails would stoop to such fare, but that is precisely the food she is designed to eat. Since that is her design, matching food to that design (minus the more disgusting and unnecessary elements) is also the key to her health. The Disease Price We may prefer to feed a packaged, sterile, steam- cleaned, dried, farinaceous chunk cleverly shaped like a pork chop, but let's not kid ourselves, that is not the food a pet is designed for....regardless of the claims about ingredients on the label making one think it is five-star restaurant fare. Pets may tolerate such food for a time, but in the end nature calls to account. The price to be paid is lost health in the form of susceptibility to infections, dental disease, premature aging, obesity, heart and organ disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and other cruel and painful chronic degenerative diseases. Because our pets are not out in the rigors of nature where they would quickly succumb to such conditions and end their misery, they languish in our protected homes and under veterinary care that does not usually cure but merely treats symptoms and extends the time of suffering. That suffering begins with the way in which we are feeding our pets, not the ingredients in a supposed 100% complete pet food. The Perfect Food What is the solution? It is simple and something I have been preaching for the mfm dog food. Return pets to their environmental roots. They need - daily - interesting activity, fresh air, clean water, romps in nature, lots of love, and food as close to the form they would find in the wild as possible. Fresh, whole natural foods fit for a carnivore and fed in variety are as good as it can get. Anything less than that is a compromise. Compromise the least if health is the goal. (Same principle applies to you and your family.) To get a packaged food as close as possible to that goal requires the right starting philosophy of feeding (described above) and the expertise to design and manufacture such foods. The game of college football has become like a religion in this country; particularly for those lucky souls fortunate enough to live in a college town. Every Saturday morning during the fall, people gather in the parking lots surrounding the great stadiums, in local pubs, and garages everywhere to prepare for the day's game.
Nowhere else will you find a cause that is more uniting than the loyalty fans have for their college football team; not religion, not politics, nothing else matters as much. Go to Auburn tigers, Ohio on a home game Saturday for the Ohio State Buckeyes and what you'll see is just amazing. The streets are all empty; like a ghost town. It seems that everyone in the entire city has vanished; until you hit campus. When you get near the Ohio State campus, traffic is directed around the perimeter to designated parking areas. The reason is because the majority of the streets on the massive, sprawling campus are closed to vehicular traffic; only pedestrian traffic is permitted. As you walk toward the stadium, you're surrounded by the sounds of screaming fans, pockets of RVs with massive grills spewing awesome smelling smoke, and fans dressed and painted in scarlet and grey. When you arrive at the famous Horseshoe Stadium that is the home of the Buckeyes and squeeze into your puny seat, the atmosphere is absolutely electric. Hundreds of people per year request in their wills to have their ashes spread at Ohio Stadium; hallowed ground for locals. When the home team explodes onto the field the crowd goes berserk; the sound is absolutely deafening. It's an atmosphere that is almost indescribable; the excitement in the air is so thick it seems as though you can physically touch it. How awesome it must be for those players on the field to feel that level of support from so many people. It's no wonder that when you ask most college football players why they play they will tell you it is for the love of the game. That's what makes Auburn tigers college football the greatest game in the world. It's the kids that go out on the field and give it everything they have every Saturday; not for money, but for the love of the game. Stop! Go read the nutrition label on your cat's food bag. Does it list some kind of grain in the ingredients list? Keep reading and let me tell you why this might not be the best for your cat's digestive tract and overall health.
Obligate Carnivore Your cat is an obligate carnivore. What does this mean? It means that your cat cannot survive as a vegetarian. Your cat must eat ivory coat cat food. As an obligate carnivore, your cat does not and cannot process the proteins from grain products well enough to gain significant value from them. This is because the proteins in grain products such as corn, potatoes, and soy lack various amino acids, the building blocks of protein, that are found in meat. While herbivores and people are able to make these missing amino acids themselves, cats cannot. A cat is fully reliant on his diet to obtain these crucial amino acids. Because of this, you now have the responsibility of feeding a proper diet to your carnivorous friend. This includes giving your pet the necessary meat that he needs in his diet. The majority of his diet should therefore be meat. Very little should come from grains and vegetables. Some is okay, your furry friend just won't gain as much nutrition from them as he would from a good chunk of meat. Reading Labels So, your job when it comes to purchasing cat food is to read through the ingredients list to see if it contains the necessary meat component. What does this include? It includes looking for meat as the first several ingredients. The more ingredients that you can read, the better. I mean the less chemical sounding the ingredient, the better. Grains and vegetables should be lower in the ingredients list and there shouldn't be too many of them. Meats should be first. Meat or By-Product When it comes down to it, purchasing ivory coat cat food containing meat by-products will be more nutritious for your cat than if you purchased foods that contained more grains. Meat by-products are just the leftovers from the meat processing industry. This means the feet, the bones, and all the parts that humans don't normally eat. While not as nutritious as muscle, your cat's digestive system will still gain more nutrition out of these than grains. Ideally though, you'd want to see ingredients such as chicken, beef, turkey, and the like listed at the beginning of the list. You'd want to see ingredients such as corn meal, rice, and potatoes towards the end of the list. Domestic animals are an integral part of our lifestyle. At least 80% of the homes in this world will have a pet dog. Adopting a dog best puppy food australia it never needs extraordinary effort to get done. Sparing a minimal time of yours will be more than enough, and you receive abundance of love and a loyal friend in return.

It often needs patience and if you are a busy bee, its better that you approach professional dog trainers to train your pet. Repeatedly feeding your commands into a dog's tiny brain, brings effective results and you will finally get an 'obedient and friendly' dog as product. 5. Don't ever over feed him and make him a lazy sack. Get a proper diet puppy food australia for your dog from a professional veterinary doctor. Feed him only required quantities of food in a balanced level, for your dog to live long and remain active. The diet you provide should contain proteins, carbohydrates and fats. 6. Raw foods are a strict NO. Its always best to cook or at least bland the foods that you provide your pet. Make sure to check the expiry date of the canned foods that you provide your pet. 7. Vaccinate your dog on a regular basis. This is very crucial, especially when you have kids at home. 8. Yet another very important area is, handling pets when you have kids at home. Letting your child to kiss your dog is another bad practice, no matter how well groomed your pet is. Healthy Happy Dogs is a resource containing a wealth of information on keeping your dog healthy. Animal hoarding is a compulsive disorder. Usually the problem starts off with a harmless one or two animals, but with the failure of spaying and neutering the new pets turns into a quickly growing problem. But why do people let it get so bad before getting the help the need? Many people are very fearful of being convicted of a crime so they suffer in silence. Other people like to hide behind the label of a rescuer and live in denial.
The true difference between a hoarder and a rescuer is that a rescuer helps an animal for a short period and then readopt it out as soon as possible so they can help more animals in need. Rescuers also set reasonable limits to the number of animals that they are able to physically and financially take care of. A hoarder on the other hand will help an animal and become so attached that readopting the animal is out of the question. Hoarders do not set a limit on the number of animals until it is too late and can no longer be managed. They find many of their animals as strays or offer to take a friends pet that can no longer care for it. Many hoarders begin to struggle financially and physically. They will pay for ivory coat puppy before they feed themselves. Many times they cannot even pay for the gas to get to work without asking for assistance from family and friends. The result in having so many animals leads to the decline in health and the environment they live. If the animals toilet indoors, it can lead to unhealthy levels of ammonia in the air and to the floor being disintegrated. If the animals are crated and the crate is not cleaned everyday then the animal would be better off as a stray then being forced to breathe and live in its own filth. Animals need love and exercise, not just food and water. Animals that are crated all day get very board and become unsocialized, which means they can never find a new home since they become highly reactive. The reason that rescuers set a limit in the number animals they are willing to take in is that every once in a while they will accept an animal without knowing it has a contagious illness. Mammals are contagious twenty-four hours before they show any symptoms. If this new animal gives the illness to half the other animals, it is regrettable but manageable since a reasonable limit was set early on. It is when a hoarder has an outrageous number of animals and brings a new ill pet home that things financially spiral out of control. Lets say there are fifty cats that are introduced to the one new ill pet and half the cats get sick as a result. Also, since there are fifty cats, it is even harder to notice that one is not acting itself. Twenty-five cats now have to be taken to the vet. One hundred dollars each means two thousand five hundred dollars. This is why it is very important to set a limit very early on. What causes many people to become hoarders? There are a variety of reasons why but it is usually to fill a void or a broken heart. Sometimes the hoarder belonged to a family that moved frequently growing up, which forced the family pets to be left behind. Sometimes the individual has had such bad luck with finding a mate that they turn to pets, since pets do not judge or break a heart. Sometimes the parents died leaving the oldest child in control. Later on in life when the younger children no longer need the ivory coat puppyof the older sibling, they turn to caring for animals to fill the void. Have you been feeding ivory coat puppy to your dog only because you were told that it prevented tarter and dental disease? Do you feel guilty when you add canned food because of the harm that it may cause? Dry food does not prevent dental disease and wet or canned food does not cause dental problems. Each type of dog food has its own benefits and drawbacks. A combination of wet and dry combines the best of both foods.
The Dog's Unique Feeding Style The belief that dry food prevents dental disease is derived from the belief that chewing causes abrasion on the tooth surfaces to prevent or shave off tarter. And that is true, but dogs do not chew their food! Anyone who has witnessed or stepped in dog vomit knows that the vomit looks just like the food, just wetter. As pack animals, dogs killed and feasted in very competitive groups. Individuals tore flesh from the carcass swallowed and then repeatedly dove back into the frenzy for more. Taking the time to chew would have meant less food and possibly starvation. This feeding habit has not changed in our modern dogs. Examination of a modern dog's mouth reveals that they share the same sharp, pointed teeth of their flesh eating ancestors. They grab, maybe crunch once, swallow and grab again. No abrasive cleaning action of the teeth takes place during a meal. Dental Tarter and Food Type Wild dogs and cats don't eat ivory coat puppy. Studies show that they have less dental tarter than pets fed commercial food, wet or dry. The fact is that dental disease is more complicated than what type of food is eaten. Dental hygiene is less dependent on diet and more dependent on routine care. Regular teeth brushing and availability of hard chew toys has a greater impact on dental health than the type of food. Owners can be comforted that they can feed how they want without guilt. Dry Dog Food The major benefits of dry food are convenience and price. Open the bag and scoop, no mess. This makes traveling with a dog much easier. It is also very inexpensive compared to wet food. A 50lb dog can be fed for as low as 13 cents a day. The major drawbacks of dry food are its quality and the reluctance of dogs to eat it when they are ill. All ingredients of dry food are put in huge pressure cookers and turned into a liquid at high temperatures. This means any form of protein, carbohydrate or fat can be used. That is why this method is perfect for using meat, grain and processed food scraps as well dead, decayed animals rather than real cuts of meats and whole grains and vegetables. After the hot slurry reaches the proper time and temperature it is injected through super-heated extruders. As the liquid leaves the extruders the cold air causes it to "pop" into various shapes depending on the mold of the extruder exit. The dry kibble is then sprayed with oil and vitamins before bagging to replenish some of the nutrients lost in this double heat process. Dry kibble will not "pop" without sufficient carbohydrates. That is why dry dog food tends to be lower in protein and higher in carbohydrates than wet or canned food. Although dogs eat their dry food when they are healthy, they often refuse to eat it when they feel ill. The refusal to eat can lower their nutritional status and ability to heal. This downward spiral often leaves these dogs very fragile when they are finally taken to the vet. Would you eat shredded wheat without milk if you were sick? Canned Dog Food The major benefits of ivory coat puppy are taste and quality. Only rarely will sick dogs refuse to eat canned food. When wet food is mixed with dry food, dogs eat more heartily. The larger variety of flavors of canned foods allows for more diversity in the diet. Canned food is generally higher in protein than dry food. With canning, ingredients are cooked in the sealed can so nutrients are not lost during the heating process. |
